On January 27, the Investigation Police Agency of Dong Nai announced the prosecution of Nguyễn Dư Thiện Nhân.
He was also placed under temporary detention for investigation into the crime of fraudulent appropriation of property.
According to investigators, the suspect had no stable employment and frequently borrowed money. He later traveled to Cambodia for gambling and leisure activities.
When he became unable to repay his debts, he devised a scheme to rent self-drive cars from multiple individuals and then pawn those vehicles to obtain cash.
The money was used for personal expenses, debt repayment, and to cover rental fees owed to earlier car owners.
The suspect was ultimately unable to redeem the vehicles and return them to their rightful owners.
Between January 2025 and January 2026, the suspect rented a total of 11 cars and pawned them, illegally appropriating more than VND 1.1 billion.
On January 14, after realizing that his actions had been discovered and that he could no longer recover the vehicles, he voluntarily turned himself in and confessed to the offense.
Dong Nai police are continuing to notify and locate additional victims related to the case to handle the matter in accordance with the law.
