Male student was tricked and kidnapped online in Ho Chi Minh city

On June 25, Ho Chi Minh city police confirmed they are investigating a case involving a 9th-grade male student who was deceived through a form of “virtual kidnapping” — marking the second such incident in the city within a week.

According to initial reports, the student, identified as L., was contacted via social media by scammers posing as police officers.

They falsely accused him of being involved in a money laundering case and demanded that he “cooperate with the investigation” to clear his name.

Using psychological manipulation, the scammers instructed L. to cut off all contact with his family, relocate to a hotel room alone, and keep his camera on at all times.

Meanwhile, they called his parents and claimed that their son had been kidnapped, demanding a ransom of hundreds of millions of dong.

Panicked, the family initially complied and transferred the money as instructed. Fortunately, they became suspicious and contacted the police, Ho Chi Minh detective.

Authorities quickly tracked down the student’s location and ensured his safe rescue.

Ho Chi Minh City police are continuing their investigation to identify those behind this sophisticated scam.

Authorities are also urging parents and students to remain vigilant and to never follow instructions from strangers online, especially when being threatened with legal consequences.
