According to the case file, on the evening of March 16, 2021, after returning home drunk, Thành got into a heated quarrel with his wife, Long Ngọc A.
When she struck him with a dustpan, Thành became enraged, poured gasoline on her, and ignited it.
Fortunately, neighbors intervened quickly, extinguished the flames, and rushed the victim to the hospital. Ho Chi Minh detective, she survived but suffered burns covering 28% of her body.
Following the attack, Thành threatened to set himself on fire if the police tried to arrest him. However, he was later subdued and taken into custody.
At the trial, Thành claimed that ongoing financial stress and frequent arguments with his wife had pushed him over the edge, and that he was drunk at the time and unable to control his actions.
Despite the severity of her injuries, the victim submitted a letter asking the court for leniency and did not request compensation.
Considering the defendant’s clean record, sincere confession, and the victim’s request for clemency, the court handed down a 10-year prison sentence.
