HCM city — Pham Van Tam, former chairman of Asanzo, appealed for a reduction in his sentence of 4 years and 6 months in prison and a fine of 2 billion VND.
He was convicted of smuggling and tax evasion, claiming the sentence was too harsh.
The appeal of Mr. Tam and his younger brother Pham Xuan Tinh was accepted by the HCMC People’s Court on October 8, 2025.
Tam admitted his mistake in late tax payment and directed to correct and pay the remaining amount.
Regarding smuggling, he changed his testimony, admitted his mistake, and his family paid back more than 400 million VND, equivalent to the value of the infringing shipment.
From 2017 to mid-2019, Asanzo evaded more than 15.7 billion VND in taxes, including more than 4.1 billion VND in VAT and 11.5 billion VND in special consumption tax.
The company purchased components from intermediary businesses, assembled products “off the books”, did not declare or used invalid invoices.
The investigation agency also determined that Asanzo smuggled 1,300 glass ovens from China, declared as separate components worth 212 million VND but in fact were complete goods worth more than 414 million.
The shipment was temporarily detained by customs and transferred to the investigation file. Tam said that he did not directly direct the smuggling.
